Midi Keyboards :
What is a midi keyboard? (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) The midi is basically an electronic keyboard you can hook up to your computer via USB.
There are many different types of midi keyboards used for music production, the M-Audio 61 key keystation midi keyboard is a great starter keyboard it's affordabale and can be found at m-audio.com or sweetwater.com. It has the basics you need to start producing it's around 300$ and is very durable.
The Nektar Panorama P4 midi keyboard (shown in the upper left hand side) is brand new for 2012, it costs a about 500 bucks and is taylored specifically for Reason software. The Nektar Panorama P4 makes producing a beat in Reason simple.
Speakers (Monitors) :
Speakers are an important piece of your hardware collection. There are tons of different types of speakers choosing the right ones are key to a great music production core. I would reccomend M-Audio monitors or Yamahas. These two brands make excellent quality speakers and will last for years.
MPC's :
What is an MPC?
The MPC was invented in 1987, it's basically a big boxed shape hardware device with a mini screen and 16 drum pads as well as having many knobs like pitch bend, modulations, tempo rates, octave buttons and fader sliders.
You run the device by loading each sound/patch into one of the drum pads and record a beat while using the click as a metronome to keep your timing right.
Here's a classic video of an MPC in action and a great example of how a song comes together (Produced by DJ Premier)
